How Do I Change My Primary Care Physician on My Humana Account?

This article describes how to change your primary care physician if you have Humana for a health insurance provider. Detailed instructions are provided for how to use Humana's physician finder tool to first locate a new primary care physician and then switch to him or her on your health insurance plan.

It's not always easy to find a primary care physician that you are satisfied with. Sometimes you have to go through a few of them before you find one that really gets you and your situation. If you need to change the primary care physician on your Humana health insurance account, just follow these instructions.

  1. Go the Humana's home page.
  2. Click the Sign In button in the upper right hand corner of the page.
  3. Log in to your account.
  4. Hover over the Member Resources section of the navigation bar at the top of the page.
  5. Click on the "Find a doctor" link under the MyHumana header.
  6. Click on the Member ID tab.
  7. Enter your member ID in the text field.
  8. Click on the Go button.
  9. Enter your zip code in the text field.
  10. For the search function, select Specialty.
  11. Enter Primary in the text box.
  12. Select "All Primary Care Physician Specialties."
  13. Click Search.
  14. Read the list of primary care physicians in your area who are in Humana's network.
  15. Click Select to pick your new primary care physician choice.
  16. If that physician is not currently accepting new patients, you will be informed. In that case, click the Cancel button and choose another physician.
  17. Select Yes once you are asked if you are sure you want to change your primary care physician.

Be aware that this change will not actually take place until the first day of the next month. Any appointments you have until then will still have to be with your old physician. If, for some reason, you absolutely cannot go to your old physician for some reason, you will need to cancel and reschedule those appointments.

Some physicians or medical companies own multiple offices. Even if one or more of these offices are in Humana's network, others might not be, so a doctor's office that is nearer to your home might not be available for you to transfer to.
