SafeLink Wireless is a free government cell phone service provider designed for low-income people who may also be on Medicaid or Food Stamps. This service isn't credit-based and provides eligible parties with free monthly cellphone service and a free cellphone. Eligible people can switch from their current cellphone provider to Safelink by following a few steps.
The first step is to determine if you are eligible for SafeLink service. Fill out the online SafeLink application or call SafeLink to find out what documents you will need to provide as proof of eligibility. SafeLink Wireless has a list of qualifying documents that you can submit as proof of eligibility. Choose from the list of accepted documents. Submit documents by uploading them online, mailing them, or faxing documents to SafeLink Wireless. Visit the website and enter your zip code. A list of qualifying programs, as well as income guidelines, are displayed. If your income falls below 135% of the federal poverty guidelines, and you are in one or more qualifying programs, you are eligible for SafeLink Wireless cellphone service.
Eligible people can keep their existing phone, if it's compatible, and request a SafeLink Wireless SIM card, or port their existing phone number to SafeLink Wireless. Call SafeLink Wireless tech support after you receive a SIM card or your new SafeLink phone if you want to port your number. Your existing phone works with the SafeLink network with a SafeLink SIM. You can enable your current phone to work with the SafeLink service with a new SafeLink SIM card. However, don't cancel your existing service before starting your SafeLink WIreless service. Otherwise, you may lose your existing number.
Request a PAC to port your current phone number. Call your current wireless provider to get a PAC code. You can get a PAC code over the phone immediately, or via text within a few hours. Give this code to SafeLink Wireless to port your phone number.
Contact SafeLink WIreless and provide your name, address, and your account number with your current wireless provider. If you plan on keeping your phone, you need your phone's ESN/IMEI number. You also need to provide your current phone number if you plan on porting it to SafeLink. A SafeLink phone will be provided, free of charge if you don't plan on using your existing phone. Keep in mind that you may have to pay fees If you're terminating a contract with another wireless provider early.
Once SafeLink has all of the needed information to make the switch, they set up your new SafeLink wireless service and port your old number or activate the SafeLink SIM in your existing phone. If you're using a new SafeLink phone, your service will be activated on your new phone. You can call your old wireless provider to ensure that your old service has been canceled.
