South Carolina offers unemployment insurance through the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce. The program's benefits are available to all South Carolina citizens who have become unemployed by no fault of their own. Citizens who lost their jobs because their employers lost revenue and had to make layoffs would qualify for unemployment benefits, for example, as would those who worked seasonal jobs that came to an end, or those who lost their jobs because of a public health crisis.

Requirements for Receiving Unemployment Benefits in South Carolina

Besides having lost your job through no fault of your own, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be able and available to work
  • You must be able to report to your local SC Work Center as required.
  • You must have earned at least $1,092 from a single employer who paid UI taxes during the highest quarter of the last year.
  • You must have earned at least $4,455 from that employer in the last year.
  • You must have total wages that are at least 1.5 times higher than the amount you earned in the highest quarter of the last year.

As long as you meet these requirements, you can receive the temporary financial aid you need to help you make ends meet until you find another job.

Checking on the Status of Your Claim

Once you have submitted your unemployment benefits application, you will probably want to keep checking on the status of the application, to get an idea of your financial situation as soon as possible. Remember, though, that it can sometimes take two or three weeks before your application is processed, especially if there have recently been a lot of applicants. It is probably a good idea to wait awhile before you start checking.
